February is Black History Month. Edith Jones was the first African American to graduate from the University of Arkansas Medical School. The Edith Irby Jones M.D. Health Care Center was named for her. She was born in Conway and inducted to the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2002
February is Black History Month. Debbye Turner Bell was crowned Miss America 1990. Bell grew up in Jonesboro and in 1998 was named a Distinguished Alumna of Arkansas State University. Bell was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1994.
February is Black History Month. Grover Evans was the first African American to swim on the U.S. Paralympic Team in Barcelona in 1992. He set five world records & won 69 national championships. Evans was born in Jonesboro & inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1996.
February is Black History Month. Al Bell was a DJ at KOKY, music producer, and leader of Stax Records. He is also credited with promoting the careers of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and others. Bell was born in Brinkley and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2002.

Update from FBI-Little Rock. We continue to make great progress in the investigation.
February is Black History Month. Lottie Lee Holt Shackelford became the first female mayor of Little Rock. In 1998, Shackelford founded the Women's Foundation of Arkansas. She was born in Little Rock and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1993.
February is Black History Month. Robert McFerrin Sr. was the first African American to appear in an opera at the Metropolitan Opera house in New York City. McFerrin was born in Marianna and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1995.
Due to the threats at SYLVAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL, PCSSD and Sherwood PD will have added security at SYLVAN HILLS ELEMENTARY as a precaution. No threat was ever made against this school. This is just a safety measure due to its proximity to the main campus.
Due to a post found on social media last night (Wednesday, Feb. 12) regarding a threat against the north campus, Sylvan Hills NORTH (aka Freshman Academy) will be closed today, February 13. This will be an AMI day.
UPDATE as of 9:20pm (2/12/20) - In our continued cooperation with law enforcement, SYLVAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL will have another AMI day tomorrow - Thurs., Feb. 13 - as we continue narrow the investigation. Safety and security for our students and staff will be always a top concern.
Thanks to the PCSSD IT department, Sherwood PD and other law enforcement we significantly narrowed the source of the threat. We feel it is safe to host the basketball games tonight and school tomorrow. Additional security will be present tonight and tomorrow at school.
PCSSD closed Sylvan Hills HS (main) today due to a viable threat that specifically identified staff at the school. The threat was isolated to a specific area which is why only the main campus was closed. We're working with local law enforcement, state police and FBI to resolve.
February is Black History Month. Sidney Moncrief played basketball for University of Arkansas and led them to the Final Four in '78. He was a first round draft pick and five time All-Star. Moncrief was born in Little Rock and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2001.

February is Black History Month. Johnnie Harrison Taylor was a singer known as the "Philosopher of Soul." His single "Disco Lady" was the first single to ever be certified platinum. Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, AR and inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1999.
February is Black History Month. Hubert "Geese" Ausbie was a member of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and became known as the "Clown Prince of Basketball." Ausbie attended Philander Smith College and was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 1995.
