The 4th annual IPDA (Public Debate) National Championships were held in Conway, Arkansas on March 29th and 30th.
Entries were by qualification only and two Mills Debate team members were selected to compete, 10th grader Melvin Henderson and 11th grader Jimiah Cooper.
In the Novice Division, Henderson finished in prelims with an even record of 3 wins and 3 losses. His achievements qualify him for the Arkansas State Championship.
The Diamond Division was a special invitational category for students excelling in any debate event this year. Jimiah Cooper was selected for this category.
She had an impressive 5-0 undefeated record in prelims (the highest of the tournament), earning her a trip to the final round. She finished 2nd place overall in speaking and was runner-up in the bracket.
Both students will conclude the debate season with several other team members at the Arkansas State Championship at Little Rock Central High School on April 12th.
The team is coached by Mr. Patrick Laxson. An interest meeting for next year's squad will be held in May.
