What are the Academies of PCSSD?

Pulaski County Special School District joined the only regional approach to academies in the nation in collaboration with the Little Rock Regional Chamber and the Jacksonville North Pulaski, Little Rock, and North Little Rock school districts. Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL) created an academy model and is assisting the districts with building a thorough understanding of academies throughout the implementation process.

The Academies of PCSSD will better prepare scholars for college and careers. The Academies will offer pathways that provide scholars with an opportunity to transfer the language of the classroom to a real-world career experience. Local business and industry leaders partner with our academies to provide these experiential learning opportunities for our scholars making learning more meaningful.

What will the Academies of PCSSD provide to scholars?

As a freshman, scholars take a Freshman Seminar or Freshman AVID course. Freshman scholars equip themselves with professional communication skills, discover personal strengths and interests, explore careers and career pathways, prepare for college and career, and imagine college as an option to achieving their career goals while in Freshman Seminar. Scholars are able to make informed decisions when selecting a pathway to study, and this journey will help them prepare for decisions related to their post-secondary education.

Once scholars become sophomores, they enter their Level 1 Pathway course and begin networking with business/industry partners who provide experiential learning opportunities for them through project based learning and business/industry tours. The tour allows scholars to continue their career exploration through a behind-the-scenes view of a workplace, providing valuable insights as they self-assess and make post-secondary decisions.

As the Academies of PCSSD become wall-to-wall, juniors and seniors will be able to job shadowing, earn industry certifications, participate in meaningful internships, and complete projects with a host of business & industry leaders making learning relevant to the scholar today in preparation for tomorrow. Scholars develop technical and soft skills needed to be college and career ready so they are prepared to enroll, enlist, and employ after high school.
